✨ The Strength in Being Seen
Hey friend,
Welcome back to another edition of Golden Pearls with Dr. Lycka.
If you've been following along, you know each week we explore one of the 13 Golden Pearls—truths that have transformed my life and the lives of thousands of others.
This week, we uncover something that might surprise you: Vulnerability.
🟡 This Week’s Golden Pearl: Vulnerability
“When we are vulnerable, we don’t lose power—we gain trust.”—Dr. Allen Lycka & Harriet Tinka
There’s a common misconception in the world that vulnerability is weakness. But the truth? Vulnerability is the ultimate act of strength. It’s not easy to be seen—to show up with your scars, your fears, your heart fully exposed. But it is in this very act that courage, connection, and healing begin.
Brené Brown says it best: "Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity." And I couldn’t agree more.
Let me share a story.
Maria, a successful corporate executive, had spent her life building a wall around her heart after surviving childhood trauma. At work, she was all business. Sharp. Focused. Untouchable. But behind the mask, she was exhausted and alone. During a leadership retreat, she finally shared her story with her team. Instead of judgment, she was met with admiration. Her openness invited others to open up, too. Her vulnerability became a bridge—not a barrier.
Harriet experienced this as well. After surviving a brutal attack, she put up emotional armor. She feared people would turn away if they saw how broken she felt. But when she began sharing her truth—first with Amber in the hospital, then with others—people didn’t recoil. They leaned in. They listened. They connected.
For me, vulnerability came when I had to admit—as a doctor, a father, a husband—that I didn’t have the answers. When I was misdiagnosed with ALS and faced my mortality, I had to drop the illusion of control. And in that space of honesty, I found something deeper: trust, love, and truth.
Here’s what I’ve learned: We don’t connect through perfection. We connect through our cracks.
So this week, I invite you to:
Drop the mask, just a little.
Speak your truth in safe spaces.
Use your story as a bridge, not a burden.
Because it’s through those cracks that the light gets in.

✨ Dr. Al’s Quick Pearl
"I never lose sight of my purpose in life."
Purpose isn’t something we stumble on—it’s something we uncover by paying attention to what lights us up. Purpose and vulnerability go hand in hand, because when you live on purpose, you must be real.
